How Should a Woman Prostrate in Prayer?

The Manner of Prostration  for women in Prayer.

Question:

Do women have a different position in performing sujud (prostration) unlike men? Should elbows of a woman touch the ground as I read in many books of Fiqh (jurisprudence)?

Answer:

Abu Sulaiman and Malik ibn Al-Huwairith narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Offer your prayers in the way you saw me offering my prayers, and when the stated time for the prayer becomes due, then one of you should pronounce its call (i.e. the Adhan), and the eldest of you should lead you in prayer.” (Al-Bukhari)

The command in the hadith was given to the whole Ummah, both men and women alike. There are no single prophetic traditions that single out women with specific instructions regarding prayer other than the place.  It was narrated that Umm Humaid, the wife of Abu Humaid Al-Sa`di came to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and said, “O Messenger of Allah, I like to pray with you.” He said, “I know that you like to pray with me, but your prayer in your room is better for you than your prayer in your courtyard and your prayer in your courtyard is better for you than your praying in your house, and your prayer in your house is better for you than your prayer in the mosque of your people…” (Ahmad)

Therefore, women should offer prayer in the same manner as men. They should raise their hands out of the ground. It is not permissible to place elbows on the ground because it resembles the sitting of a dog.

Responding to this question, Dr. Muhammad Salah states that there is no difference between men and women regarding the manner of performing prostration in prayer.
